Danakosha Aid – Gegong/Tibet

_In the summer of 2011 the Danakosha Aid Project was founded by the Buddhist Association "Danakosha" in Helsinki/Finland. The project's main objective is to support the population of Gegong in eastern Tibet. Due to the political and climatic conditions of Tibet, the life-circumstances of the nomadic people in Gegong are very difficult – they have basically no access to educational and health facilities.

Not only the nomadic lifestyle makes it difficult for the parents to give their children access to education, public schools are simply too expensive. Another problem is that the classes in state schools only take place in Chinese. So it's not possible for the children to learn reading and writing in their native language – a major drawback for the learning success of children.

In August 2011 the first plans for a school building in Gegong were made – the building will serve both as an educational facility for children, as well as a cultural center for the adults. The classes will take place in Tibetan.

Project partners are the "village community" of Gegong, the local monastery and the Padma Trust for Children. Danakosha Aid has set a target to generate enough donations to build up a school building before the end of 2013, including sleeping accommodation for more than 60 children. Thus, education is also accessible to those children whose parents move around with their herds in the vast steppes of Eastern Tibet.
